The Island of Adventure.

Cheung Chau was our holiday paradise. In the 1950’s and 60’s we spent all our summer and easter holidays there, escaping from the heat and traffic of Kowloon. The house was spartan, without electricity, and water for cooking was drawn from a well beneath the kitchen floor. The view was lovely and there was often a pleasant sea breeze, but it got very hot at mid day, and at night we always used mosquito nets. Although it was not a very large island, there was much to be explored. As inquisitive and energetic children we often roamed the paths and coves around the island, looking for caves and sea shells. Much time was spent on the beaches, swimming, snorkeling and boating. The monsoon season provided drama in the form of tropical rainstorms and raging typhoons. In the wake of typhoons there were usually days of huge waves, which we loved. Looking back at the years we spent in Hong Kong, my brothers and I remember the Cheung Chau days as the most exiting and happiest of our childhood.
